The Auditor-General of South Africa is offering bursaries to students pursuing Chartered Accountancy qualifications at universities accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
The bursary supports students from Matric level through to postgraduate CTA studies.
Successful bursary recipients are expected to complete their articles through a training contract with AGSA after graduation.
Fields Covered
The AGSA bursary is aimed at students pursuing a Chartered Accountancy pathway. Funding is available for the following qualifications:
- BCom Accounting, CA stream
- Bachelor of Accounting, CA stream
- BCompt
Applicants must either already be enrolled in, or plan to enrol in, a Chartered Accountancy programme at a university accredited by SAICA.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for consideration, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens.
- Be currently completing Matric or have already completed Matric.
- Be enrolled in, or planning to pursue, an approved Chartered Accountancy qualification on a full-time basis.
- Attend, or intend to attend, a SAICA-accredited university.
The academic criteria differ according to the applicant’s current level of study.
Benefits Provided by the Bursary
The AGSA bursary can provide financial assistance towards:
- University tuition.
- Accommodation.
- Meals.
- Prescribed study materials and textbooks.
In addition to financial support, successful candidates may receive opportunities that contribute towards their professional development, including practical workplace exposure, career development initiatives and experience within an environment focused on accountability and good governance.
Bursary recipients may also gain access to a SAICA-accredited training environment, supporting their progression towards becoming Chartered Accountants.
Matric Applicants
Learners currently in Matric who intend to begin their first year of university in 2027 must meet the following requirements:
- Obtain Matric exemption with university admission.
- Achieve a minimum of 60% for Mathematics.
- Achieve a minimum of 60% for English.
- Mathematics Literacy will not be accepted.
- Be planning to commence first-year studies in 2027.
- Intend to enrol for an approved CA-stream qualification.
First-Year University Students
Students currently completing their first year and applying to progress to second year in 2027 must:
- Obtain at least 60% for Financial Accounting.
- Have achieved a minimum of 60% for Mathematics in Matric.
- Have achieved a minimum of 60% for English in Matric.
- Be registered for an approved Chartered Accountancy qualification.
- Be entering their second year of study in 2027.
Second-Year University Students
Applicants currently in their second year who intend to enter third year in 2027 must:
- Obtain at least 60% for Financial Accounting.
- Obtain at least 60% for Management Accounting.
- Be enrolled in an approved Chartered Accountancy qualification.
- Be progressing into third year in 2027.
Final-Year University Students
Final-year students seeking funding for postgraduate studies in 2027 must:
- Obtain a minimum of 55% in all core modules.
- Be studying towards an approved Chartered Accountancy qualification.
- Be entering postgraduate studies in 2027.
- Have secured acceptance into a CTA programme.
Work-Back Commitment
The bursary forms part of a professional training pathway. After completing their studies, successful bursary recipients will be expected to complete their articles through a training contract with AGSA.
Applicants should therefore be aware that accepting the bursary involves a commitment to progressing into the Chartered Accountancy training environment.

- A university acceptance letter issued on the institution’s official letterhead.

Students currently in their first year of university must submit:
- ID document.
- Matric certificate.
- Complete academic record.
Supporting Documents for Second-Year Applicants
Second-year students are required to submit:
- ID document.
- Complete academic record.
Supporting Documents for Final-Year Applicants
Final-year students must provide:
- ID document.
- Complete academic record.
- CTA programme acceptance letter.
Document Submission Guidelines
All supporting documentation should be submitted electronically according to the following requirements:
- Documents must be saved and uploaded in PDF format.
- Each document must be no larger than 2MB.
If an applicant does not yet have one of the requested documents, they should instead submit their latest available highest academic results.
