NSFAS 2026

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government initiative under the Department of Higher Education and Training that provides financial support to students who cannot afford tertiary education at public universities or TVET colleges. It offers both bursary funding and student loan components, depending on household income and other eligibility criteria, with the aim of making higher education more accessible to South African students.

To apply, you must:

        • Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.

        • Combined annual household income must be R350,000 or less, or R600,000 or less for applicants with a disability.

        • Must be planning to, or already studying at, a public university or TVET college for a first undergraduate qualification.

        • Cannot apply if you already hold a degree or are pursuing a second undergraduate qualification.

        • Must have passed Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent qualification for new applicants.

        • The chosen qualification must be approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and/or the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

        • Students at private institutions that are not approved by DHET/SAQA do not qualify.

What does it cover?

        • Tuition fees and registration fees at the public institution.

        • Learning materials, such as books and study resources.

        • Accommodation or transport, depending on where you live and your study situation.

        • Living allowance to cover day-to-day expenses.

        • Personal care allowance for essential needs.
